Wednesday, June 11 (continued) - That evening, Doug came over and we played guitar until our fingers were red and raw. We both had let our callouses fade away over the past few weeks. Since we new the songs pretty well, it did not take long to finalize the arrangements. Man, I wish we could do this once a week. Someday, perhaps. We probably stayed up late.
Thursday, June 12 - That morning, we continued to rehearse and arrange the tunes. That afternoon, Doug needed to help Heather with a photo shoot down at Temple Square. He was gone until later that evening. We decided to get some chow and we headed over to Mimi's Cafe on State and 54th. It was pretty good, although a bit pricey.
Friday, June 13 - Kevin and Jenn would be busy with wedding stuff that day. Kevin's old roommate, Craig, was getting married. Kevin helped us set up recording gear before they left. The idea was that Doug and I would record the basic guide tracks to the songs. The evening and the next day we would record with Kevin. The recording went all right. We weren't playing our best, but it was hard to put a lot of effort into these scratch tracks. There was one funny moment with Tikka, their Corgie. I was tapping my toe to a song, Los Lagos I believe, and Tikka kept attacking my foot. We had to start the song over a few times. For the most part, she was very quiet and calm. We only had to take her out every few hours to do her dirty bidness. She was a sweet dog and we named the session after her.
Doug and I headed over to the Training Table by Fashion Place Mall for dinner. Just after we ordered, a rather plump woman came over and asked Doug how on earth she was going to be able to get into her car since Doug had parked so close to her. After a rather awkward exchange, he went out to move his car. Apparently, they had parked too close to the line on the right-hand side, and Doug was well within any normal parking space. Hey lady, have you ever thought that your large caboose might be part of the problem? Oh well. The burgers and cheese fries arrived and there was much rejoicing. As we finished dinner, Kevin called to tell us they were on their way home. Great, now we could get back to recording. However, this was not to be. We had fun hanging out with Kevin and Jenn, but we didn't actually get back to recording. Kevin then informed us that he and his wife were going to have a breakfast date the next morning and that they had a Father's Day dinner the next evening. Doug and I were a bit frustrated since the whole point of coming over to Kevin's house...was to record with Kevin! That night, we were both a bit steamed but we calmed down enough to get to bed.
Saturday, June 14 - What a crazy day. We went over to Kevin's mid-morning and we had a little chat about our frustrations. I think he understood. We got to work on one of Kevin's compositions, "Under My Skin." We then did a bunch of crazy, wacky overdubs on "The Medium is the Message." It was a lot of fun. While Kevin laid down some organ and piano parts to "Medium" and "Los Lagos," Doug and I helped fire up some brats. Ah...lunch was rather tasty. Ben came over to hang out with us a bit. It was great to see him, although it was a bit sad to know that he was not participating with us on this album. He seemed genuinely interested in the new tunes and he was very supportive. Kevin and Jenn went to their family dinner thing and Ben treated us to some taco salads at Café Rio. Very tasty. As we left the restaurant, Kevin called to say that he and Jenn decided they would take off early from the family thing, especially since we had been planning to record for several weeks. Once everyone was settled back into their recording grooves with full tummies, we jammed and finished off Kevin's song, "4:51." This one will definitely be on the next album. It grooves. We finished off the night with some loud laughter. Kevin read us a list of silly and rather irreverent song titles of a band whose name I cannot utter, neither in spoken nor written form. I had not laughed that hard in ages. Doug, in his infinite wisdom, decided we should head up to Logan that very night. Since we had already been staying up until 1:00 AM each night, we might as well get up to his place. I fell asleep for most of the drive, but we arrived safely. Doug gave me a quick tour of their beautiful home. For whatever reason, and in spite of being really tired, we didn't get to bed until very late.
